Can't Hear Audio In Maya

i have imported a .wav audio file into maya to go along with an animation, and it shows up on the time slider, but for some reason i can't hear it when i push the "play" button. if i scrub along the time slider, i can hear high-pitched sounds (like the audio in fast forward), but i can't ever get anything coherent. i'm new to Maya 2008, so i'm not sure if there is something else i need to do to make it play? like maybe with playblast? (i have also adjusted the playback speed to "Real Time (24 fps)" )

I guess that you have your preferences in play frame by frame. Go to your preferences then animation and there you will find how you want your time line. Say 30 fpt or what ever you want and you should be able to listen to your audio now

In other words, set your Timeline preferences to "Real Time"
