Cartoon effects (3)

how can i render clips to got cartoon effects, thanx.

Well there are some filters in the Stylize effects that might give video a draw look. But I don't know of any filters that will give you a cartoon look.
Do you have an example of what you're going for?
A lot of times people acualy hand draw over video as you would a 2d aniamtion to get the cartoon look.
If you mean a cartoon look to say, a 3d aniamtion then thats something you would do in the package and not in AE.

JTK not necceserily. Say you rendered out layers. Then you could do teh dfollowing entirely in post with two passes in 3d

Fist pass a white lambert producing color ramps, one pass with zdepth and the camera u/v vectors.

The first woudl be used for shading youd map arampi in 2d on that, the second is used for edge detection algorithms base. Now with theese 2 things one would end up with pretty damn convinsing drawn apperance. Especialy if one used a doublesize image as source.

Additonal alyers could be rendered for line width reflections etc etc.

the benefit in this is that angular objects could be colored better.

Also then theres the option that color areas are indexed in soem way allowing you to colorizze with palettes in post isnide the edges for even more controll.

I'm certain that the poster is talking about processing live action footage to look like a cartoona nd not dealign with 3d at all.

If you are working with live action footage there are a few thigns you can do but nothign that is a simpel on efilter solution. For coloration you can use colorama or posterize. In order to get outliens aound peopel or anythignelse youwill either have to cut masks (rotoscope) or shoot it on bluescreen and use the matter generated from the key.

joojaa were you talking about shading 3d in a compositor to look like 2d? Why would you do that?
Why not just render it with ramp shaders or use Tomcat, wich I just bought and am really enjoying playing with.
As far as live footage you might be onto somthing, but heck, most of the really awsome cartoon replacments of live footage are hand drawn.

Yes.

Because you get more controll of how the shading happens. Also you get more controll on the lines, and you dont need extra plugs. But honestly tough in maya you should use the mentalray edge detection stuff it absolutely rocks qualitywise. Even so its a good idea to have a few masks for the lines so tht you can selectively key them in out for a more custom hand drawn look.

I wouldt necceserily do that tough i would instead build 3 layers of shader outputs instead. One for color indexes, one for shading ramos and their setpped forms (i get the other for free you know), one for edges. Maybe even uv and z info if i decide i need to later adust the lightning.

Thisway i can if the shoot realy needs itr quickly recolor everything chenge the lightning mood. Besides now i can use parts of the footage in a pich during editting somewhere eslse in the film if need be for something that seems missing by jsut keying the light and mood to match that place... and no one will notice if it short enough.

Do you have an example frame of how this turns out? I'm curious. Recently I have been playing with Tomcat and have been really impressed.
Sadly I havn't had the time to get into mental ray yet.

Nt right now but i could do one for you!

In maya 6 the edge rendering is maede much easier to do than iot was previously.

Through mental ray you mean?
Yea, I havn't had the time yet to play.
Like I said, i've been really impressed with TomCat, the bit I've gotten to play , though its based on PaintFX.
Let me know if you have an example, no biggie but I am curious now.

Aside form some of the cool effects everyone else has mentioned, Illustrator CS2 has a cool option in it now called Live Trace, and you can get some nice vector painted stylized looks from that as well. This may very well be not the exact look you are trying to achieve jooja is more along the lines of cartoon but this is something to look into if you like that stylized look. If you figure out a way to batch the frames then you're ready to rock!

I created a 50 minute video tutorial on Converting Video into a cartoon - you can find it at creative cow.net, if you click on my head in the After Effects forum. I also have it available as a 3-part Podcast in the Creative Cow After Effects Podcast, which you can get off itunes, or from: http://www.creativecow.net/aepodcast

its interesting how people seem to be able to dig up 2 year old therads an dpust styuff as if their indea is directly descendant to the thread, Anyway whtyy the hell dos he use jpeg iman compresson on compresson yuck!

Anyway 2 years ago would have been hard to do it thisway but yeah it works ive done it before with siilliar applications. Still tough mr can do this better from the same footage BUt yes with some comscripting ist actualy possible to do thsi a bit more streamlined tough the javascript is fine in many ways.

THing is adobe si still bumming alot of the scriptwagon. They need to open their gui for scripts more and illustrator realy need acces to the gradient mesh!

arabinowitz tutorial is perfect for every cartoon effect. But you have to spend sometime on that , there is an other way to handle it , I use Flash for this type of effect and it is really cool and fast
