Just looking for some critiques on this character. he's made from nurbs, poly's, and sub-d's....also did his cape as a cloth object. www.mikefortner.com/pages/blackthorn.htm
What type of reference are you using to develope ideas for the mechanical aspects? I think you need some additonal reference from some real world stuff. Other than that he seems to be progressing along nicely if you are aiming for more of a cartoon like approach rather than realism.
thanks for the comments John. The reference I've been using is the actaul Mcfarland toy...It's about 6 inches tall. The Character is Blackthorn from Ultima online, and all of his design comes from the toy. maybe i'll work with some shading to dirty up the look of the metal a bit, and I'm still working on adding detail to him.
Its not my type of character, but it is a well made model. I would say however, the right hand is totally out of porportion. It just looks far too small for the character. Hold your hand over your face and notice the porportions. That rule seems to be missing here. That hand is too small. It doesn't work visually, it just looks wrong.
thanks for pointing that out....I completely overlooked that. I fixed it, and should have some updated renders soon...
Also, I really like the sculpting on the face, its very expressive of the hyperthetical anatomy. Should look nice animated. On that subject, you make want to adhust that default pose for the mouth to something more neutral, else you may find it a little trickier to animate than is necessary.
....and good idea to do him without legs...certainly makes it easier to animate
....when in doubt, remove its legs...can be a good theory.
Yeah i think LEGS are way OVER RATED too!! >grin
thanks for all of the comments... I made some changes with proportions in the face and hands, and also added some general detail. I also threw up an avi. of a cloth sim. It's compressed with divx...there is a link on my site to it, if you don't have it. www.mikefortner.com
