well yes doing it the old fashioned way aroud is a bit bad (you know there has been calibrated environs far befroe icc profiles were around).
But untill then you can use following workaround:
Thing is it works quite easily to calibrate your gfx cards response curves couterwise, and reset it back later (btw dont your drivers support luts? mine do) wich causes even the oglviews to reflect the thing better! And swithing it back when you end mayas easy enough. (and doing it by script form within maya isnt impossile)
But i dont think icc s have penetrated the movie word i think they use custom luts instead. Mainly because the tv mediums color reproduction is so bad you cant lut it even if you wanted to. ANd tghe films variance is so big that you cant lut the look anyway. But for tv work get a broadcast monitor its cheap and accurate.
One reason why i use framecycler as a viewing tool isntead of mayas. BUT incidentaly i dont think this is so big a problem since allmost all productions pass this to post porcession ANYWAY, for color toning (yes please dont play the but shouldnt bee needed card its still wery much the real way to go about things and lut is not the main reason, but rather the client who allways changes his mind once you HAVE rendered)
