if you start with the diffuiuse color and them mult with occlusion fine! And then add all additional light on top of that.
Hioever note occlusion is just something that describes how the abient light is distruibuting better than one constant color. So in general the occluison should be added to your object. Offcourse itll need to be tinted the way each surface acts on it but.
