This all depends. First once you create a ctrl you need to orient it and delete the orient. Type this in the script editor- delete orientConstraint; that should orient the ctrl to the joint and delete the constraint. Don't do this method if it's for a wrist or ankle joint. After that you can either point and orient constraint the joint to the ctrl for IK ctrls. Or for Fk just Orient Constraint the joint to the ctrl. Make sure to grpFreeze the ctrls. This is a script you will need.

There are couple of ways to do that;
Shape parenting;
- create your nurbs Circle
- run the command parent -r -s nurbsCircleShape1 joint1
joint parenting;
- parent your controlObject to the parent joint of the joint you wanted your object to control
- select your object and freeze its transformations
- parent the joint you want to control to your controlObject
hope it helps,

Hi .. !
I saw your posting days before but I was not clear...If your using control maker script... only thing you have to do is to select what constraint you need(Orient/Point) then the shape of the control...(circle/cube) in the control maker menu then finally select the joint and press "Enter".. Thats it you will get your things done..Plz reply if your not loooking for this..
Rgds,
