You should select pairs of vertices that are supposed to match up and then try to merge them one at a time.
i have done that already (by pairs), still nothing happens.. i believe it is because of the 'instance' opitions.. the point being, (the instructions said) it will mirror whatever i'm doing on the other side, so i do not have problems with symmetry; otoh, nothing happens when i try to merge them, even by pairing them one at a time...

Of course, if you do this, it's going to fill in the space in between the two vertices, so you might want to select one entire half, pointsnap the pivot to one of the vertices along the inside edge, and then pointsnap that pivot to its corresponding vertex in the mirrored duplication. That way, when you get around to merging the vertices, it won't change the shape of the helmet at all.
ok i'm going to try this one - 1 question: how do i point snap? i just started with an exercise book a few days ago, ..
U
thank you for replying..

when you duplicate create a copy, not an instance.
then, select your two objects, choose poly > combine.
then select your vertices and choose edit poly > merge vertices.
you cannot merge vertices from seperate objects.
Hello silk!
well according to the book, in order for me to not worry about symmetry and mispaired vertices, i should set it on instance...
but i'll try your recommendation.
thanks!
