Im so confused now...
No kidding
That would be teachers for you. (are you sure your teacher didnt mess up Ctrl and CoG
) Wich would also obviously explain the need to ask,
just parent the damn thing.
But CoG is actually where the weight for your object is, its different it is affected by the joints but its the sum of all the weighted vectors of each joint itself. Offcourse the controll might represent the cog of that sub joint by being placed exactly around the center of the joints gravity. Tough usually it isnt but rather its placed closer to the actuall joint socket. But it certainly isnt usually called CoG very offten, not where i come from.
For example take this rig:

Wich represents a typical (but simple and only half finished, mainly because the author didnt bother t set the defult manips for the controll nodes and theres wierd uneveness to the rig) rig, does not have GoG placements, but rather just plain Controll ones. And it does not have a CoG indicator.
However i have seen the root control once before refeered CoG but thats just plain misleading. Unless its aciually linked to be and stay on the center of gravity. (wich is possible to do)
