nevertheless, if you dont need the depth of field effect it's quite simple:
create a plane, chose emit from object, set random speed, select particle object and use the sprite wizard and chose a snow image with alpha you created before.
if you don't know how to follow these steps, then you shouldnt use a highend tool like maya to achieve this effect 
(except of course you're about to really learn it, but then you could start with easier things or read the manual on dynamics first)
