hi there!
ok, this is my fery first thing i made with maya that wasn't from a tutorial out of a book or off a website and i would like to know what you guys think of it. it is just a logo i made for myself and maybe someday when i am better at animaiting it will be the thing i put before animations i have made. i used maya to make this.
and
and when i was finished, i thought i might as well try animaiting it too so here is that.

You don't want to put it over anything.. Ever! ; )
The hat and stick add character to it.. but that's about it. I didn't even read what the logo says..
Don't let this put you off posting, keep putting your work up for crit because you'll find it's the best advice you can get, but this is a typical newbies really aweful looking logo, and don't take this negatively, but bounce from it and aim at doing better next time.
Here are some notes I found very useful as a beginner.

I hope you'll find them as useful as I did.
All the best.
newbie, just discovered how to extrude text, hasn't got to texturing tutorials yet so you just slap on a 3D fractal texture that just says to teveryone in your class "I did not do this using vectors or corel draw". Sky n clouds background, no understanding of light or composition.
....thats what that image says to me. You done a tutorial number 1 that shows you the basics, which tell you to extrude some text. ...so why ask for a critique on your execution of a BASIC tutorial !!!
As above, don't take that defensively, just learn some more and start a propper project.
A good logo doesn't have to be so literal, and probably shouldn't be. I would suggest going to a free font site and download some that you like and go from there. Try to remember that your logo will have to be reproduced. So, see how it looks in Black and White (gray tone) too. The 3D stuff shot at an angle is always going to be a pain. You might consider keeping the logo 2D. Beveled edges are enough to see a 3D effect in 2D.
If you want to do something with the pimp attributes, why not make a character like the Mr. Planters peanut, which coincidentally has a hat and cane too. ![]()
Hope this helps,

Horid! i agree ![]()

Alot of people it seems want to jump in at making snazzy 3d shapes and effects without ever having the knowledge of an actual designer.........suppose that makes them.........doers?
Anyways my point is that learning how to design (in photoshop, illustrator ) is the basis of making good looking work........its gotta look good, thats the whole aim of the project.......you want this, you want that, this goes there etc.but in the end it has to look good.
If it does'nt, its a real nasty design, start from scratch again because no amount of technical knowledge can work alone and look good without having a great design idea behind it.
Somone is bound to disagree with me here but I started off as a multimedia designer for 4 yrs, now I'm takin the step into motion graphics more........and thank god i did those 4 yrs of design, theyre my key.......
I can even get away with doing sinple non-fancy animations with video because the design work thats involved is solid, and looks good....
I just need the technical knowldge now..........dammit.
Hope this helps any.
