For depth map shadows you can do two things,
A: Lower your map size
B: Up Your depth map filter size.
You'll probably land up doing a bit of both, upping the depth map filter size over a certain amount (5 ish) will send your render times sky high. But lowering your depth map size will lead to funny edges.
For raytraced shadows you have to up your samples and your light radius. Once again, you'll have to play to find a balance. To many samples and your render times will be unnecessarily high.
the second backround could be quite moody if you treat the whole thing right.
good luck.

Will that make my shadows softer, or harder. It seems that doing that will make them have more of an edge, not less....
Btw, Thanks for your input, greatly apprieciated
