Cursor changing to default X cursor

When using Maya 3 on my Debian box whenever I right+click in any of the viewports, or in some other areas of the interface the cursor will change to the default X cursor (the big black 'X'). It is really ugly, and the only way to get it back is to reset back to the original cursor with xset.

This is really annoying me!

I've spoken to some other people who have had the same problem, and they haven't found any way to fix it.

This problem doesn't happen in KDE, but in E or Sawfish or Bbox or anything else it happens.

Anyone else having this problem?
Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks!
Daniel

I am having same problem running Maya 4.5 under RedHat 7.3 / Gnome / GeForce3 w/ latest nVidia driver.

Does anyone here have any idea to fixing it ? Something relate with cursor font ??

Thanks in advance !

confirmed on RedHat 8.0/Gnome too.
However, it doesn't appear on KDE. So is this Gnome issue??

Anyone please let me know if it happen / not happen on your end.

Thank you,

This question has been posted many times. A simple search for the word "mouse" came up with these posts:
http://www.highend3d.com/boards/showthread...&Main=76716
http://www.highend3d.com/boards/showflat.p...rt=all&vc=1
http://www.highend3d.com/boards/showflat.p...amp;o=&vc=1

Thank you for the post, beaker.

However, thoese links are nothing to do with my question. they're talking about Alt-key taken over by linux thing. My question was actual mouse pointer SHAPE changed to "x".
Someone told me this is known bug/problem from first release.
so i simply switched to KDE.

Thank you,

They talk about the alt key and the right mouse button being mapped to other functions. The X poping up has to do with maya and the WM conflicting with their hot keys. As it says in those posts you need to unmap both alt and right mouse button in the WM preferences.

beaker, i don't think you understand what we are talking about. (forgive me if you do)
Maya was fully operatable under Gnome. I changed alt key mapping, so there's no limitation in viewport operation. Can move, tumble,dolly...

The probelm was, mouse pointer, which supposed to be shaped as 'black/red arrow' most of the time, changed to "x" mark.
Usually, it changes to x when you call marking menu by hitting space bar, but as soon as you release the space bar, pointer shape will be _back_to_red_again_. But not in Gnome enviroment, it never come back to red arrow. so you have to operate maya with 'x' shaped mouse pointer which bugged first poster and me.

I just went thru twice thoese threads you linked . but i couldn't find they are talking about this problem. If they do, Can you quote correspond lines for me?

If there's anything not clear, please let me know...

No, it has nothing to do with maya conflicting with hot keys of a WM. It has to do with maya bugging out X into defaulting to its default cursor (named XC_X_cursor in /usr/X11R6/include/X11) whenever you activate any marking menu (not the hotbox itself). It refferes to a file /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz. Change it there and you'll have default
and extraordinarily ugly X cursor to whatever you replace it with. Alternatively you can download http://themes.freshmeat.net/redir/cursor-f...-default.tar.gz
his default cursor is a plain black cursor.

Wow i didn't expect there's a work around ! this must be my x'mas gift. I'm gonna try it as soon as linux box finish rendering.

Thanks a LOT, ustaunye !

yeah, it works

btw you don't need to wait for the linux box to finish! you can just
su into root and:
mkdir no_ugly_x_cursor
cd ./no_ugly_x_cursor
lwp-download themes.freshmeat.net/redir/cursor-felipe/34029/url_tgz/cursor-felipe-default.tar.gz
tar xvzf cursor-felipe-default.tar.gz
cp ./cursor-felipe.pcf.gz /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/
rm cursor.pcf
mkfontdir
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr -fg black -bg gray

and you're all set with your brand new beautiful left pointing standard cursor:)
lwp-download is in one line with "themes.freashmeat..." or just use a browser to get it.

yeah and put http:// in fron of theams.freash...
lwp-download http://themes.freshmeat.net/redir/cursor-f...-default.tar.gz

BTW does anyone know how to get mouse wheel to work with Slackware8.1 (it uses XF86Config not XF86Config-4) ?

thanx

Thanks for posting this info. The x cursor thing was a bit annoying.
