Custom FPS in Maya?

Okay, this one has me a bit stumped.

How in the world do you set a custom fps in Maya? In the Setting's preferences you can choose from a selection of options in the pulldown menu, but you can't enter a custom number from what I can tell.

This is a bit screwy. For NTSC they offer 30fps, not 29.97. They also offer an option for NTSC fields at 60fps instead of 59.94.
I can find options for playback speed for fps, but nothing for custom rates.

If someone knows how to enter a custom fps for rendering to I'd greatly appreciate it.

If there ISNT a custom FPS option, I have a new feature request.

I think that when they say 30fps and youa re using audio then it is in fact 29.97 .. For aniamtion the issue here really is synching with audio. Video playback may be 29.97 but you still get 30 frames extracted from a sec of video or 60 fields.

You can set the timeline to playback at an other speed and I guess enter 1.998 there to get a fps of 29.97.

Well, actually the real problem is in the post stage. After I leave Maya. Maya "should" be able to tell a sequence to assume a specific frame rate that can be translated into another application, like After Effects. Yes, you can tell AE to inturpret footage to whatever frame rate that you desire, but then you need to figure out your playback speed in Maya. This is very backwards, and frankley seems a bit sloppy.

Ideally, you "should" be able to say I want 42fps (for whatever reason) in Maya and have that applied in your post application.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

In AE you can edit the Interpretation Rules.tx file in the programs root directory to recognize certain file sequences and treat them how you want.
First thin to do is to decide what format you will be using this way and load it in AE. Hold the Alt key and click ont he file. At the top of the Project window it will show a 4 letter code for that file type. If it's a targa file from maya it will say TPIC

Your entry would something like this in the interpretation rules..

# assume Maya Targa is 42.97fps
,, , "TPIC", * = *, *, 42.97,
