Dammit....to do with the matrix logo Tutorial!

Hi there, i've been trying out the Matrix logo Tutorial an to a certain point then the program won't accept an expression:

index=rand(1,26);

Everytime i enter this, it comes up with this:

Error: Attribute not found or variable missing '$': index

but there is a variable called index

Why is it doing this?

your expression should be:
$index=rand(1,26);
a variable isnt a variable without the leading$` sign ..
