Deleting Shape Key Targets

hi i have a sequence of nurbs surfaces i import and i create shape keys etc. no i would like to delete my shape targets (just to make scene lighter) but it destroys the connection to the shape keys with it. is there any way to get rid of the targets without destroying the shape keys ?

you find the object in the explorer that is shape deformed, open up the cluster that has the shape keys on it.
you open the little + at the shape key and freeze the copy operator underneath. that will break the live connection and you are set
