Deselects components when switching to object mode

hey!!
i have a problem that i hope is going to be easy to solve, so here goes.
when i select a trim-edge in component mode, then change to object mode, the trim-edge gets automatically deselected.
how do i stop this?
e.g i have a trim-edge on my models head. ( i used it to cut-away a hole for the mouth.) then i made a c.v curve as a profile for the lip. i want to select the curve for the mouth in component mode, then switch to object mode and shift-select the lip profile curve so that i can extrude the profile along the curve of the mouth.
i can get it to work on the computers at uni but it won't work on my computer at home. this is really beginning to frustrate me.
so does anybody know if there is a setting that i need to change to get it so that i can select something in component mode then shift select something in object mode?

Your second object that you select, use either the outliner or the hypergraph to select it rather than a modeling view. When you do your second selection in the outliner you will use ctrl-select as opposed to the hypergraph where you will shift-select.
Or you can use the proper mel code to select it
