Disabling options undoable on current selection

Is there a way to do this? I hate how Maya makes EVERYTHING enabled even though most of the time the current selection prevents 95% of the options from working, causing an error. It would be nice if Maya had more intuitivity in how it displayed menu options relative to the current selection. For examample, if a NURBs surface is selected, no functions relating to editing curves, polygons, etc, should be enabled in the menus.

Has someone (or is there a way to) rewrote (rewrite) Maya's startup MEL scripts with this functionality? I'm not a programmer so I wouldn't know how to go about doing it but I have changed the status (help) line (the correct name for Maya's "status line" is "toolbar", by the way) text and noticed some commands that display options based on selections (or whatever).

Any ideas? I'm still learning Maya and it's VERY frustrating dealing with its quite unintuitive interface.
