I'm created a displacment map for a rock pillar a natural looking formation. Thing is it has to be tall very tall but mainly in the bottom and mid section. As I raise the Alpha gain to get height I start to loose map quality, the pixel variance becomes very low at the top and create step like differences in displacment. I hope that made sense.
Could I map a ramp to the alpha gain to compress area of the map into less displacement (this is just an idea I thought of while writing this post so untested) or would a 32bit image with more varience in pixel values be a better solution.
