DOF question

Im working a bit with XSI and Depth of field.
I have tried both the lens DOF and the outputshader DOF. I got the lens DOF to work very well although it was slow because I had to turn up the aliasinglevels so much, is there a way to adjust the samples/quality of the lens DOF without changing the aliasing levels? When using the output DOF shader it first renders the objects just fine but when it applies the DOF the objects disapear and the whole rendering gets black, any idea how to fix this?
Also, what's a good compositing program that supports 3d effect such as DOF using the depthchannel in the image?

Doing the DOF in the renderer is usually too slow for me. I'd only use it on scenes that are just too complicated to post the dof. After effects does a really good job with DOF and it handles XSI Z-pics rather well. I believe that Shake will also work with XSI Z-pics, but it's a little more expensive. Below is an image that I did using After Effects. It only took a few min to do it.

I got aftereffects, and Im using Effect->3d channel->depth of field
Is that what you're using to? I got some problem setting it up, my edges get's a black ugly border sometimes, and the blur doest look right. Maybe you could send that exampfile you had, plus the settings in aftereffects, would be really nice..

Hello Andreas,

Yes, I used Effect->3d channel->depth of field. The DOF controls are very sensitive, moving them just a small amount can have a drastic effect.

Here are my settings.
Maximum radius set to 2
Focal plane thickness set to 5
Focal Plane to -13
