Dragon Model Critique

This is my first post. I am a 20 year old Computer and Visual Imaging major at Cogswell College in Sunnyvale, Ca. I have been doing 3d for a year and half, and I am interested in anyone's opinion of a model of a dragon that I made in Max R3. It is not fully textured, and I am looking for suggestions on how to texture it. This model was made completely with splines (Surface Tools in Max), which I recently discovered is a very difficult method for getting fine detail in comparison to polygon Subdivision modeling (NURMS in Max). I have just recently switched to Maya 3, and just from my brief experience, the Sub D's seem to be the best modeling method available.

I am actually impressed with this model, especially for a first post. Because it is not a true to life animal (i hope not, eeek) it is hard to judge on accuracy, but there seems to be a high level of detail and also looks as though it should move fairly well. It would be very interesting to see some test animations of the dragon. good work so far.

I agree with Sithos, it is a very nice model.

Just a personal preference- but the teeth don't seem functional to me. I have no doubt you modeled them exactly as you imagined them, but they seem so long that I can't picture the dragon holding anything it it's teeth. Biting something larger looks like it might break of some of it's teeth. Gums would really add to the mouth, but you state this is a work in progress, so I'll assume this is a future detail anyway.

These are minor things though, I think the model will look great regardless.

Again nice work. I can't wait to see you animate the dragon.

Your model was pretty good.Even though I haven't made anything like that in 3D, in drawing I have made loads of dragons and I got tons of material on them.I have a few suggestions but they are quite long and detailed. If you prefer, e-mail me and I can help you a lot, I can even send a few photos of dragons and suggestions on how to texture your model.

The body looks great. As mentioned before, the teeth don't look too functional, and in my opinion the flaps where the head meets the neck look weird. If u look at classic imagery of dragons (D&D style) you'll see horns with a mesh between them. It kinda looks like those flaps you have. Something like horns should add more detail to that area so that it matches the rest of the detail around the head.

Looking great!
