Dual cpu rendering

When i start XSI i always receive the message "using 1 locked render license". Batch render mode also takes only 50% of the cpu power, although i have got 2 mentalray licenses.

this is what a softimage tech sent me when I asked him the same question:

On NT everything is set up automatically (unlike Irix) you can not precisely tell a CPU to do precise task , that is how NT works. However you can precisely tell it how many thread you want XSI to use File>Users Preferences>Rendering>Number of Rendering Threads> # (Mental Ray tokens you want, remember you are limited to how many MR found in your license)

If you have 2 CPU on a single machine you should be able to see 2 Lock Render when launching XSI at the bottom left corner of the splash screen , if you only put one thread in your options then it will only take 1 Mental ray license (1 Lock Thread). There is also the option -Threads in Ray2 ( Ray2 -h) this will give you all of the option that you are available.
I hope this is the info that you are looking for.

That is exactly what i have been looking for. Now it works.
Thanks a lot

Actually, you can control where NT puts the thread in terms of what CPU. You right click on the process name in the Task Manager and change its Affinity. Default is all CPUs on.

that might be true for nt, but I'm working on a w2k machine and I've looked for Affinity thing but I couldn't find it.

cheers

Win2k Is Windows NT. It's Windows 2000 only in visual elements.

2) Launch the Task Manager. Under te Processes Tab, right click on the process name (i.e. Photoshop.exe). Highlight "Set Affinity" and left click.

A check box form will appear. CPU0 is first CPU and CPU1 is second. Uncheck the CPU you do not want the process to use.
