Hello all,
We have a dual opteron workstation here with a Tyan K8W motherboard. It's running Mandrake 10.0 linux with the 2.6 kernel. The machine is used for stereo programs (we're a protein analysis lab). The original Matrox video card couldn't work due to AGP problems. I replaced it with an nVidia 980 XGL and got the AGP working. But the way the nVidia displays colors makes this an unacceptable choice as well since the data is nearly unreadable, and some things (moving windows about, etc) are really slow despite the AGP. I'm using the nVidia driver, not the nv driver.
So we're looking at getting a new motherboard and video card for it since what I'm finding out is that the Tyan motherboards route AGP traffic through the 2nd CPU and that is causing problems with the display. nVidia was supposed to be the only company that fixed this in their driver but still if it makes the colors wrong then we can't use it. Hence - need a new video card for the colors and speed and a new motherboard to be able to use a different video card. (Did I lose everyone with that description?)
So, any recommendations on motherboard/video card combinations (not too high end - we're federally funded, which means fairly cheap) that will run dual opteron processors and that can display stereo images clearly with the 2.6 kernel? The new PCI cards might be a solution but I have no experience with them to know.
Thanks for any help.
