DV Playback problem

After I finished maya rendering, I rendered it out as DVAVI using premiere, but the play back is really slow...I am using GForce GTS and win 2000 OS with 1Ghz cpu...anyone knows why?

Hey moonlight.... what CODEC are you using to play back the DV? I am assuming that (since you have rendered it to DV) all the resolution, aspect, compression and frame rates are OK and compliant with the standard. For the most part, DV playback with a software CODEC can be slow if you are either scaling it or playing at full resolution, but this may not be the case given your CPU. Some things to check include:

  • What kind of disc are you playing from?
  • Have you defragmented it of late?
  • How much memory does your machine have? (DV requires a minimum sustained data transfer rate of a little under 4MB/sec for smooth playback.

  • Anyway, hope this at least gets you started; ping me and maybe we can resolve your problem....

The maximum sustained data rate for DV is 3.5Mb/s from all the data I've read. That's megabits too... is my brain failing me?

I have had lots of problems with DV on the PC as well, and I'm a hardware/OS technician with 20 years of experience. I'd rather just buy a new iBook with firewire than deal with this crap anymore..but Vegas is still the best.
