Dvcpro Hd From Hvx200 Problem

I'm using an HVX200, at 720p30. I import clips using the P2 Import feature in Final Cut. I often just want to get clips off the camera and into Shake and the import feature in Final Cut seems the best way. However, when I take these converted clips from FCP's scratch folder and put them in Shake, their aspect ratio is wrong. If I put them first in FCP, then export from FCP as a QuickTime movie (without making any modifications at all in FCP), the new QuickTime movie looks fine in Shake.

I also have the same problem if I use the Send To Shake feature in FCP to send the clips to Shake. When they come back in to FCP, they look fine, but while in Shake the aspect is wrong.

Does anyone have an answer to this problem? I'm using the latest version of everything, including FCP, Shake, QuickTime and OS X.

this is because 720p DVCPRO HD footage is actually 960x720 pixels with a non-square pixel ratio (just when you thought you got rid of them they come back with HD

final cut and quicktime read a flag to display it as 1280x720 pixels, however this is an on the fly adjustment. shake on the other hand just shows you the native pixels. there are several ways to deal with that, either you set the defaultAspect and the defaultViewerAspectRatio in the globals to 1280/960 (ie 1.33333) and keep working in 960x720 native pixels (this is useful if your final output has to be DVCPRO HD again) or you just use a resize node to go to square 1280x720 pixels. it really depends on your workflow.

Chris, thanks very much for the speedy reply. The timing is funny: I was just doing the keylight tutorial (in Shake's own tutorial documentation) and it more or less discusses the same thing (page 176). I tried it out with my own footage and, as you said, it worked.
