Can anyone recommend a cost effective editing card? Looking for one that can capture decent frame rates with good resolution and output to a variety of formats. Anyone that has had major issues with product support due to a crappy capture card please let me know so I can stay away from purchasing it myself. Thanks.
well..not sure what you mean but the way of cost effective but a DI digital Voodoo card is certianly a nice capture card.
DPS makes a few cards and systems that can be hooked up to a breakout box for a wide variety of outputs.
Mostly you're looking at a grand to 2 for most of these solutions on the low end for a nice output both digital and anologe.
I would asume a basic 100 buck firewire card would not meet your needs ?
Like a ADAPTEC 4300 card.
I've had great luck doing that for small projects where the client doesn;t want to pay for higherend capture. Loosk fine if NTSC is as far as its going.

There are many items to considder but maybe start with these:
-you need to decide your budget up front (if it's under $2000, you'll probably be limited to DV and/or SVHS/composite connections and image quality)
-know what software you will be running on your machine (make sure it's supported)
-anticipate what tape formats and signal transports you may be asked to output to (DV, SDI, analog component, digibeta, betaSP, etc)
If you anticipate doing commercial CG work, you should probably shoot for a card that will capture uncompressed -and work with rendered uncompressed file types. -compression is BAD for your art!
(**DV is compressed @ 5:1)
-I always search product-specific newsgroups on the web before I buy or recommend anything so that I can hear what the users are saying about their experiences with the specific board...........
