I skimmed the FAQs and couldn't find what I am looking for at first glance.
What I am trying to determine is how in Maya 8 would I assign some simple
user properties to an object, that could be exported to a game engine.
In the simplest of terms, we are building a real time 3D video game level.
We need to export a poly cube. The 3D artist must be able to assign some information
to the cube that upon export, could be read the game programmer. In this
case, we need to make the cube "collidable." The vehicle in the game must
bounce off the cube.
As a comparison, if we were doing the same thing in 3ds MAX 9,
the 3D artist would right click the cube, go to OBJECT PROPERTIES/USER DEFINED,
in there the artist could type any information the programmer could use, such as
this is cube is collidable. The text could be in the form of switches, -coll, -t, -s.
After export of this object the programmer/game engine could find these switches (-coll, -t)
and implement them. This is what the programmers are calling "assigned user properties."
I'm trying to find out how we'd do the same thing in Maya.
In Maya I know with a selected object there is a "NOTES" field in the ATTRIBUTE EDITOR,
in which data can be typed. Would this be the same as OBJECT PROPERTIES/USER DEFINED as in MAX?
Unfortunately I am a regular 3D modeler and not a techinical artist.
My experience with MEL is limited.
Thanks.
