Feathers?

How do you animate feathers like the one that shown on Pixar's "for the birds"???

I use something like a fur, but it spit feathers instead of fur strands. For this you pretty much need soem extra development of buy a plug form somebody else. (saw a free one for renderman once ages ago probably wont work anymore)

Its not that you couldn't make each feather as maya nodes but it would juts lag you down, you can allways inject stuff like leawes grass, fur, feathers etc render time.

don't know too much about Joe Alter's Shave and a Haircut but saw that the individual hairs can be replaced with geometry. If that plugin is in your budget people that used it tell me it is way better than maya's fur.
