Firewire Write Problems

Hello, how are you?

I have been working with Shake for a couple weeks now and so far my only gripe is regarding saving scripts or renders to an external harddrive. Basically, I can't. I am using a PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 2G ram. I can read files from the drive and make composites but when I try to save or render it can't access. Also, I have only been using the Apple system for about a year so I might be missing some logic there, too. One more thing that could be the problem, I originally formatted the external drive and saved all my files with a Windows machine. Thanks!

OSX is like most unixes. It mounts everything in the /mnt or in osx case the /Volumes folder.

My guess is your drive is formated to NTFS. OSX can read NTFS partitions but can't write to them.
you can use the disk utility to check.

The first thing is -- can you see the drive in Finder? If so you should be able to see it in Shake? You would go to the root of you directory in Shake then look in the /Volumes directory...

Hey thank for your help, guys! I see the volume listed in the shake directory under Volumes. When I go to save script as, I get "Error saving script". I used disk utility to find out that my internal drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) however the external drive is formatted Windows NT Filesystem. If I can read files but can't write, is there a way to format an external drive so that it works with both operating systems? I could always just go get another external drive and format it on the Mac. I'm doing a shot for my demo reel right now so it's not a priority, but I'm going to begin working on my thesis project soon so my master plan is to have one external hard drive to keep all my files on for the next two years. So far my master's plan is more like a slave's plan.

Yup, FAT32 (I guess it's called something like MS-DOS under OS X). Not the best option performance-wise, but you'll be able to read/write from Windows, Linux and Mac OS without problems.
