First Model With Mental Ray

Hey all, I made it through a tutorial on Mental Ray.. worked with several different HDRI images and finally found one that worked really well with the gears. I wanted to post it here and see if anyone had suggestions for improvement. this is the first model Ive used with mental ray and HDRI images

Yes now make the cogwheels shaped like real cogwheels are shaped. Cogwheels havent looked like that since the 1800's by the way.

Also the shadows seem to have adifferet kind of exposure from the wheels. Also build form nurbs bacuse now you have very nastyy nickeling.

looks good to me. I dont really care if they look as if their dated back, that could very well be your motive anyway. If its an exercise for you to develop the skills, its good. Ive used Maya for about a little less than 2 years for architecture/interior/products, but have never used Mental Ray! I know. Im a sucker. I dont know, but since your still learning this, could you help me out too? Ive got Maya 6.0.1 for Mac os x.3, but I dont even know jack about mental ray nor HDRI??

All in all, the image looks clean and well done to me. GOOD JOB!

Nice Render, good job.
Only crits would be: the round surfaces of cog looks segmented, and an ambient occlution pass might help in adding depth to the shadows.

only cogs were made of wood or iron in 1800's certainly not chromed.

on top highend bar click Maya-> in navbar click tutorials -> rendering/lightning -> mentalray -> Create a gear and render it realisticly with Mental Ray in the center console
