Frame Resolution [Anamorphic 2.35:1]

I am trying to learn about propper resolutions to allow for wide screen cinema. When i render something, what resolution idealy do I want to render at to produce a wide screen effect, so that on a regular tv, the black bars appear, but on a HDTV or other film process, it has a 2.35:1 anamorphic?
