Geforce 4 or ati 9800 pro?

I currently have a Geforce 4 Ti 4600, and am begninning to use Maya. I am also looking to upgrade to a radeon 9800 pro as i also like gaming.

I know about the Ti 4600 and how it is not recommended for use with Maya, but it works fine for me.

My question is which is the better card for Maya, the Geforce 4 Ti 4600 or the ati radeon 9800 pro?

I know work station cards would be better, but i like gaming as well, so a gaming card is required!!

System spec: athlon 3.0xp, 1 gig ddr333 ram, asus a7n8x delux motherboard.

NNNnnnnoooo!! definitely the GeForce4-Ti is better (more reliable at least) for OpenGL in maya. if it ain't broke don't fix it...

What is the problem with the 9800 pro's within Maya?

Is it that nvidia are better cards for openGL than ATI. If so would I be better off getting a Gforce 5950?

I am wanting to upgrade my graphics card for gaming mainly but don't want to disable the use of the card for Maya. Please can somebody advise either way giving more details.

Is there any reviews reviewing the newer gaming cards against the work station cards for both games and 3d apps?

I would of thought that the power of the newer gaming cards is quite significant, say the likes if the geforce 6800? Are the work station cards as good at gaming as the gaming cards and are there any comparisons?

Well it seems that the radion series is not really supported in maya. Please somebody let me know if this is incorrect.

Also, now that has been clarified, are the geforce 6800 cards supported or are they at least or probably better than the geforce 4 ti cards?

I had to monkey around with older drivers and softquadro to get my 5900fx faster than my old 4mx 440. Also, a friend got much better scores with his old 4600 than with a 5950fx (testing with maya 5 spec benchmark.)

I don't know anyone that is using a 6800 yet.

The new ATI cards will be just like the old - their opengl driver hasn't been improved yet. Here's the details of my personal Maya+ATI pain:

Thanks for helping me choosing not to get an ati card and the problems they encounter. OK now I definately am not going for an ati card....

I would really like to go for the 6800gt card, money not a problem but dont want to fork out for the 6800ultra personally.

Does anybody know of the performance difference between the geforce 4 Ti 4600 and the geforce 6800gt within maya. The difference within games is vast especially at higher resolutions and with aa and ani turned on. Surely the 6800gt must be faster and basically stable due to using same uniform drivers?

Looking at the 6800gt card, it rocks in gaming performance and seams to be a very powerfull card. Does it also perform better than the geforce 4 ti's in maya? or at least the same?

Additionally where is this test system to check the speeds in maya?

I dont see the reason your bashing a 9800 card in maya..
its "unsupported" that means unsupported
You can get a firegl z1 and its just fine in maya

dont ant a 9800 anymore, been talked out of it, now looking at a 6800gt from nvidia.

Anybody tell me if this is compatable?

all i can say with absolute certainty, is that GeForce4 cards and below are fine, so long as you have a clean driver install. I personally havn't tested the GeForceFX line, although I'm guessing the same rules apply.

with regular GeForce cards you have to be careful that you get a good driver version. 41.09 and 45.23 are good for maya, but i'm pretty sure they won't support the new FX cards, so probably best to install the most recent drivers from nVidia's site.

don't get talked into getting a workstation ATI card, for that kind of money you may as well buy a workstation nVidia quadro which are much more widely used for maya, and probably faster per $.

The current Nvidia drivers are fine in Maya.. i've been using them for a while now without a hitch... which is good

but the 53.03 drivers are now certified for Maya.. so they should be good too

Thought I would keep those updated who care to know...

got the new 6800gt card now, which rocks in games both in speed and picture quality.

The difference in maya is a faster card that i can now have no jaggies with, turning on anti aliasing with no slow down.

cool, glad i didn't go for the 9800 pro as this is much better!!!

Few questions:

Can you run Artisan ok on that 6800 GT in Maya?
Any slowdown in shaded mode or artifacts, dissapearing lines in wireframe, graph editor issues, zoom in-out problem, or when switching viewports ?
What is the number of polys it can handle before is chocking?

FYI you can do all of those things well even with a GF4-Ti. the only issue is the grey line in the timeline and graph editor, and some hardware renderer features. GeForce cards push just as many polys as quadros, always have.

Yes even faster in fact. But the quaddro cards do not die at the higher end of the spectrun just as quickly and abruptly as a normal gamer geforce because of how the drivers are optimized. Wich menas you may push a bit more ona quadro.
