Oh, Thank GOD!
I'm taking a class in 3ds Max, and have asked around and so far no one in my class has had an answer to this probelm.
the little directional arrow like symbols have dissappeared when I choose the move, or rotate tools.
I finally found an answer on another forum, and I know that the answer is press x, but I

try going into the gizmo settings: Customize -> Preferences -> Gizmo Tab
there you can play around with the settings, etc. There should be an "On" tick at the top.
If that fails, maybe have a look at the helps files.

oh, yeh, I have a question too.
In relation to zooming when scrolling the mouse wheel; Sometimes as I get close to an object the zoom can often get way too fast or way too slow (almost not moving at all) is there a setting somewhere to troubleshoot this problem, because that would be fantastic. ^^
Oh, also, I have my character (who is a 3D stickman) standing in the middle and a large surface which counts as the horizon. I light him with an IES Sun, with and intensity of 2000lx, which is a fair distance away from him, and when I enable shadows, Area Map shadows work, but don't fade away, and Shadow Maps don't show at all. But if I remove the Sun and get a spot light, just near him, the shadows work perfectly, But if I intensify it, and move it to the same distance from the stickman, the shadows have the same problem... Is there something that I should be doing, that I'm missing?

Thank you so much, but unfortunately that didn't help either.
I did hear that if you uninstall and reinstall the program that could fix the problem, but I was hoping to not have to do that.

As for your lighting problem, I'm new at 3ds Max, so I don't really know what to say.
but you COULD try like messing with the controls for the individual lights. It sounds to me like a setting isn

kool thanx, and yeah, I spent 2 hrs palying around with the settings a couple of weeks ago, and I ended up having a seperate light for each of the characters in the aniamtion and have the light follow them. This works, but I need something more practical...
I wonder if Pieter3d may know anything about it.

I need to know how to do something in max that I can easily do in maya. I wouldn't normally care but it's for a school assignment. in maya it's called a set driven key where one object can "drive" or key another object. but it's not the same as linking, because I can tell it to link ONLY (for example) the "rotate X" of the first object to "drive" ONLY (for example) the "scale Y" of the second object. Those are just examples what I actually want to do is cause a sphere to controll (or "drive") only the up and down of a cylinder and the same sphere to "drive" only the left and right of another cylinder. If this is too hard to follow let me know. If you have maya I can email them the file that demonstrates the idea in maya. thank for the help!

Hey Woz,

What you are describing is called wiring in 3ds max. You have to use the wire parameters dialogue box.

Don't ask me how though but that is what you need to do for what you described.

For the person who is trying to get the gizmos back- you can try hitting the plus key to make the gizmo bigger, it might just be that your gizmos are minimized.

if your looking for something that allows the control like set driven key in maya your looking for the reaction manager...

here is a simple example of both

reaction - basically if a take two objects a sphere and box for example:
in the reaction manager i would select the sphere as the parent object and the box as a slave.
move the sphere on z and set the slave to move on y now i can move each on z and y any which way you want. The box will only react to the sphere at the certain points you set up and stop after that.

wiring - the same two objects you can move the sphere on z and cause the box to move on y indefinately. by wiring the z movement on the sphere to the y on the box. However your box will no longer be able to move the box on y by hand unless you unwire them.

it all depends on wether you need the box to stop reacting to the sphere at a certain point and wether you want to be able to move that box on y after the fact.

hey, was wondering why my latest render turns out to be a 64kb avi file that doesnt even play. i can physically see each frame being rendered, but when its done, the movie file is way too small and wont play. anyone with enough skill to get this one?

Hey, I'm just starting with 3ds, and I have ver. 7... I'm trying to make a subteranean sewer/monastary walkthrough... I need to do intersections and trims... Basically making the rooms and attaching the tubes and corridos so they will be accessible from the rooms themselves. I hate to ask about something so basic, but it's really bothering me that I can't get this. if you could help at all, It'd be very appreciated. Thanks

(I'm using a SuperSpray particle system in Max 7, just so y'all know)

So I have this minigun in my animation, got the muzzle flash and tracer rounds sorted, but when I come to have the shell casings flying outta the side and hitting the floor, nothing seems to go right!

First off, the orientation when the geometry is spawned is completely off and I can't find the settings to put a rotation offset so it'll spawn horizontal as opposed to vertical. This would really solve all of my problems, but there are a few other things I might as well clear up as I can't find a tutorial/help file detailing such things (even in Max's own help!).

If you change the rotation settings so it's spinning all the way down, how can you make it stop when it hits the ground (a deflector). I've always had this problem that rotated objects keep spinning once they're stopped falling or whatever, so it there a way to kill the rotation?

Don't just limit the answers to using SuperSpray, if anyone can think of a better particle solution feel free to tell me!

because you shouldnt render an animation as an avi, you should do an output sequence and then save it out using the ram player (or a real video program) avi's are far to eazily currupted. It could be that you are using an weird codec perhaps.

save yourself a headache and render out as bitmap sequence.. then if an error happens you can continue at the frame of crash.

Hi guys,
i have some problems going from maya to max, so i hope you can help me.
In the material editor, can i select a material and get all the meshes/faces using that material in the viewport? so i can quickly reassign a new material to them?
Also, if for example i have a scene textured but all my material slots are cleared, can i quickly fill all the slots with all the materials used in the scene? Or should i pick them up individually with the eyedropper?
