Hello,
I am just getting started learning Studio Tools with the PLE. I have been using Rhino for manufacturing but I would like to learn Studio Tools simply for image creation and personal design projects.
I am having a difficult time getting a good feel for the UI and controls. I am used to Rhino and find the choice of mouse controls and shortcut tools awkward in Studio Tools. I realize that there maybe customizations that I am missing, so I will post some of my questions and hopefully someone can help me if I am missing some customization controls. I feel like I must be missing some major basics here, because the control seems so limited to a "one funtion at a time" concept with mouse control (though keyboard hotkeys seem pretty fully implemented).
Global Mouse Controls:
Is there anyway I can set some global mouse controls that are not specific to any tool that I am using? There does not seem to be a default tool; rather you are always using the tool you have selected. In Rhino after you perform a tool function (Scale for instance) the pointer reverts back to global controls instead of still having the Scale tool active. It essentially reverts to the equivilent of the "Pick Object Tool" after you have used another tool. If you wish to re-use the tool function again (Scale again) you can Right Click and it will get you back to the tool used last and you can perform the funtion again. After using the function again you are back to the "Pick Object Tool". You can toggle between the last tool selected and the global "pick object" with the Right Click(which serves as the Enter key as well). I cannot find any way that I can have a "Global" mouse control that I can revert to automatically after using another specific tool. It seems that in Studio Tools I always have to go to the menu and select the tool I wish to use, even if it just the basic "Pick Object Tool" and then I am stuck with it until I go and select another tool. This feels much slower to me than the way I am used to. The "Pick Object Tool" also does not seem to be able to drag object (not as parameter defined as "move"), which is a fundamental operation that is included in the basic "pick object" global mouse control in Rhino. You can just click and hold down the left mouse button to select and drag an object. Not so in Studio Tools?
Are there any mouse parameters that I can change? In Rhino the Right mouse button will tumble the perspective view or pan an orthographic view when pressed and held down. The mouse wheel will zoom in and out of both perspective and orthographic views. When these two functions are used together you can quickly tumble, move in and out, and pan the view to move rapidly around 3D space all with just two fingers while the other hand is left free for hotkeys, etc. Is there any way I can create something like this in Studio Tools. I have found that I can assign a hotkey to the Tumble function but I can't assign it to my mouse. I also can't find anywhere to implement the scroll wheel at all.
I have more questions but I will experiment more before I post. I apologize if these questions are too basic for this forum. If anyone has customization suggestions or would like to share how they use Studio Tools to zoom, pan, tumble to "move" around in the 3d environment as quickly as possible (and preferably with as few tools and hands possible) please let me know. Any mouse control customization suggestions would be appreciated as well.
Thanks,
Ben
