Hi,
I need to get the world space coordinates where the user clicked on a surface,
what's the best way to do that?
The dragger context looks nice, but I haven't been able to bring the coordinates of the closest surface..
Thanks

And you will not, you can however if you make the closest surface live but other than that maya does not project on the geometry. Howver all maya tools repsect this.
You can however use the artisan tools for doing this.
I have done that using the artUserPaintCtx however it doesn't allow to paint on the first click. That's the problem..
Yes well then it will not work. Api time.
OK. What approach do you suggest?
Well quit frankly i would contend with clicking 2 times. Its just way too much work for saving one click.
(offcourse you could pre select the surface piror to this)
Hmm, I missed something. When using my context, one the surface is selected - you would have to click and start dragging for the context to start drawing. It will not draw until you drag and the brush meets the first uv point.
Well yes thats one mode of how artisan works yes. And yes you coudl use dragger context with he surface live too...
But what exactly do you wish would happen.
I have an asset library and allows you to select assets (models) and then paint them over a selected surface.
The complaint I've had is that it will not allow you to draw the minute you click.
So I'm trying to find a solution by another context. Making the object live is good enough, but I don't understand how do I make Maya to place a custom asset (mesh) on the live object.
the dragger context will return the projected surfaces point for you.
But then you loose the ability to paint very effectively at least.

Well then you will definitely need to do some thousand of lines of c++ code to satisfy your users. because the other solution will cut even less to your users. Theres only so much mel can do about things.
Have a nice month. But to be honest i dont think your going to get it that much better for the work amount. Its not worth your time to be honest. This si teh kind of issue you should take up with your support contract.
Anyway i will recheck the changes they made to artisan maybe its already there.

That's OK - I meant to add the dragger context just as an addition for this purpose alone. It's not about the guy's requirements. The task intrigued me and I wanted to figure out how to make it happen. I'm not gonna spend a month of C++ of the mf.
Projected surfaces? what does that mean anyway? Could it be manipulated to get the point of surface/mesh I'm clicking on?
