QUESTION:
Can Maya do this ?
Yes
QUOTE
You can easily select these transition from a spreadsheet looking tool
and thus easily override the default animation with the new abilities by simply selecting
other animations sequences for the transition.
Yes
Anyway the gambryo is not so much about the animation tool that's just for testing how it would work in your engine. So its a demo fo how the game engine works, its not mean for animation just to show how it works (they even tell you animations are made in maya or max). The point is you get the code to do this IN YOUR GAME without having to progam this, you get a api for it etc. There are other tools that do this sure.
If you do this in maya and maya does it yes. But maya does not automagically convert thet into something you can use in a game Maya works things inside maya it in no way makes for a exporter or code for your game Gambryo does. And while you can do thsi in maya its just sort of something youd do to test it. It still needs to go to the game pipe at some time. Your not paying for the animation tool, because its not what they sell they sell you programming interfaces.
But 65,000$ is not really all that much its 13 man months of work. Now doing the importers exporters blenders etc is not a very hard job. But it is work, if you where to write all of this form scratch, the opengl/directx drawer etc then youd certainly use up far more money then 65,000$. Yes theres alternatives that have different licensing fees. But one thing is certain. If you do the game a engine yourself, you wont be doing the game during that time. Youd rather spend this time making look and feel of your game. Even maya would cost WAY WAY more if it would come with source code.
Which do you want sell your game, make a game or develop a game?
But yes theresw other options about too... plenty of them in fact. Some have a licence per title some ae less polished but essentially free. What you ballance is abilities cost and speed with how much resources you have.
