Hair follicle rest pose from curve?

For Rest Pose on a follicle, you can specify: From Curve.According to the documentation:

This specifies how the rest position of the hair used by dynamic computations is determined. It may be straight, based on the start curve position or a separate input curve may be used.

Where does this separate input curve come from? Is it the rest curve? Is it any curve that you make? Thanks.
