Hair Too Stiff

I altered the existing curly hair sample to make a thinning wavey hair for an old character. I tried tweaking stiffness settings but the hair remains stiff. When simulation setting is set to Dynamic follicles only no hairs are displayed. I tried converting curves to dynamic- I get a message that curves are already dynamic. How can I solve this problem?

If the simulation method on the follicle nodes is "passive" then set them to dynamic. Passive follicles simply interpolate the motion of dynamic ones. If you have no dynamic follicles then they do not get any motion.
