Hardware Texture Proxy

hi everyone,

can anyone shed any light on the feasibility of doing the following:

say you have a very high resolution texture applied to an object- can anyone think of a way of having a much much lower or maybe an entirely different texture visible in the opengl viewport to that which would be rendered?

cheers ,
tarticus

Everything i do falls mostly into this category. Mainly becasu etheres no way i can replicae the render chain so i use proxies for this stuff. And usually that means i only view on shard of the texture if anything.
