Has anyone used a 64 bit opteron system, and if so

Well I have to make a call here. We are getting new machines from BOXX tech. We can go with the tried and true 32 bit XEONs or the new Opterons.
The problem is this will probably be our only large computer purchase for 3 to 5 years...ouch I know..
So if we go 32 bit and in 2 years are screwed it will suck major.
Since most apps are being rebuilt 64 bit as we speak and will be a standard in a year or so...
But if we go 64 bit AMD Opterons we can always upgrade the chips on the mboard as a "maintance" purchase, but if the thing goesn't work well we're very screwed.
So I wanted some real advice from anyone whos been testing them or using them. The reviews I have seen say they are stable in 32 or 64 bit land and run nice and fast. But any REAL info would be greatly appreciated as I try and make my decision.
We can't wait for itanium 2's.
Would love to wait a few months but sadly when you have the money from Corprate folks its NOW or never.

Well good news mr. Jake. I happen to have an athlon64 system headed to my house right now. I'll run a bunch of tests on it of course to let you know how it runs in 32 bit mode.

It'd probably be a decent investment though.

Also its a safe bet your never going to have any itanium2's; I don't think any of the software you guys run is even made for it.

i've just put my brand new Athlon64 3200+ together.... and i risked buying a VIA chipset too... [insert scary music here]. but its real fast and stable so far, i will be running maya benches tomorrow or the next day after i install everything.

Itanium 2s...? don't u mean Xeon 2s..? yeah i hear you about not waiting forever - there will always be something new around the corner.

will post some stability and performance tests on maya soon, just run SETI@home and it absolutely rips!!!

The more and more I hear about the opterons, the easier I feel about going that way. The big tech meeting is coming up, so as long as no one freaks out I betcha we'll be getting those rather than the 32 Xeons..
love to hear more about the benchmarks and stability when you guys get going! We'll havea 10 processor renderfarm, a big fat gigabit server, and 5 dual workstations when alls said and done. Can't wait ! haha. I'll have to share pics.

major problem with my new system - i dunno if u guys have seen my post to the h3d listserv, but basically my Maya interface is really slow. it can't be a problem with Athlon64's everything else is sweet its just the maya GUI. i'm not sure at this stage what is causing it but i hope to hell its a software or driver problem, will keep everyone posted.

1000101 could you please let me know what motherboard, chipset and CPU you have bought, as well as the video card and driver issue. i would really appreciate feedback on your maya gui speed when u have it running.

(I'm using win2K, SP4, maya4.5 btw.)

Hi, I've just bought a workstation with this configuration:

Opteron 248
4 GB ram
3 HD USCI 73 GB 15000 rpm
Nvidia FX3000
XP Pro Sp1
2 Viewsonic VP211B

I use Maya, Photoshop, AE, Premier, Stitcher.

I've run a Maya test with the scene from this site and the result was 36 sec. (is it good?).
I've a problem with the mouse speed (I've tried with 2 differents mouse). The pointer loose speed when I use some applications like Maya and Stitcher, not with Photoshop. It looks like is an openGL problem, I've installed the latest driver from invida (53.03) but it haven't fixed anything. Apart this the computer is working well, very silent, not hot, but I've to test it in deep this weekend. Monitors are fantastic, very sharp and high contrast. Does anobody can suggest me where can I download a good benchmark software? And any suggestion for the mouse problem will be glad.

is that single or dual? 36 seconds is VERY good

i just tested my new Athlon64 3200+, 58 seconds which ain't bad. a Duron (1.3GHz) we have tested at 2 mins 43 seconds lol.

as previously mentioned; try earlier drivers. 45.something mentioned in this thread should work; also; nvidia just released a 56.somethingorother recently that may fix the issue as well.

I had a chance to try one out recently and it was good.. it was a dual 246 and it was almost twice as fast as a Xeon 3ghz system.

However were runnign AE 5.5 which is old and it would lock up the machine every once and awhile. Also we mixed up ram from different manufacturers and it didn't liek that either.
