Hdv And Shake

FCP supports Sony's HDV hi def format very well. When I send an HDV clip to Shake, Shake processes it fine. But when I render the clip and send it back to FCP, it won't play (stutters then locks up FCP).

The original HDV clip plays fine in the timeline, but the Shake-generated clip will not play at all in FCP (either in the same timeline or in a completely new project).

The Shake-generated clip does, however, play fine in QuickTime Player --- just not in FCP.

Anyone have any thoughts / experience??

If you are using the "Send to" command in FCP and setup the script name and output file before launching Shake the File format should import fine back into FCP

However if you are using "FileIn" to import the movie into Shake you need to make sure that the "FileOut" Node is using the same settings as in FCP - FileFormat needs to be "Quicktime" and Codec needs to be HDV 1080i60 or 1080i50 depending on your FCP settings

If the Output settings in your "FileOut" node are the same as your sequence settings in FCP all should be fine

Shake will output the Animation codec as default for Quicktime movies

Shake Does Not Support HDV
Shake does not support long-GOP formats, including HDV, MPEG-2, or MPEG-1. If you
want to use HDV media that was captured with Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express HD
in Shake, recompress it with the Apple Intermediate Codec first.

You can open HDV files in Shake.

You should not export HDV in Shake, use Motion JPEG, Intermediate or Animation Codec. Reimport that file in FCP and let it render to HDV, gives you very good result.

I'm goind it this way all the time. I'm working with 3.5

Why you should not export as HDV:
Shake opens an HSV file as 1920x1080 instead of 1440x1080. When you export it tires to compress the file as 1920x1080. You won't be able to play that file in realtime in FCP, even if it shows it.

We have always had success using send to from FCP and then FILEOUT from shake. this way we ensure we have the correct screen resolution and image quality. The new file can simply be imported back into FCP to overwrite the original file.

I would not overwitre the original file. I simply put the rendred file over the original file in a new track.

Exactly. Just bring it back in and have it take the place of the original file. You'd probabbly speed up performance by removing the original file out of the timeline also. Just be sure to save the original in case you need to come back to it.
