High Res Texture Baking

I am working on a project that involves projecting high resolution images onto models. These projections will then have to be baked out so they can be touched up and blended together to come up with final textures.

The images being projected are up to 10K x 10K plus. When these textures are baked out I need to keep the resolution nice and high. The Maya Software "Covert to File Texture" feature available in Hypershade does exactly what I need, but can't handle input images that are as big as mine and can't output images larger than 4k. In fact, using the Maya Software renderer I can't even render a frame of my model with one of my projections (I get a black object).

I can render out a frame with Mental Ray. I know there are baking tools for Mental Ray and I think that this might be my solution. Does anyone have any tips or links that would be helpful for me? I need to be able to bake out textures without baking in any lighting/shadows/reflection/etc. Basically I'm only trying to lay out the texture according to my UV map.

I've been experimenting with this tool and it has gotten me past a few of my problems, but there are still a few hangups. I can now successfully project very hi-res images and bake them out, but the Mental Ray Batch Bake tool has problems when I try to output an image larger than 4096x4096. Up to this size and the process works perfectly. However, I need to be able to output baked images that are upwards of 10kx10k.

Sometimes when I try to bake out a file over 4k I will get about 10% of the image at the bottom edge complete, but the rest is black. This 10% is correct and matched up to the 4k version of the image, but I never get the entire thing.

Any tips for getting really large images to come out of Mental Ray's bake?

Hi,

maybe you can try to batch bake in several 4k parts using the UV range value in the bake UI.
(i.e --> U Min 0, Umax 0.5 , V Min 0, V Min 0.5 ...) ?

It should. Btw are you sure you really need 10k?
