Houdini like photoshop

hi,
i love the concept of houdini with all that procedural stuff.
I was just wondering if there was the same concept in a 2d software for image editing. Photoshop is getting on my nerves and i always find myself in a position where i would love to work the same way than in houdini !
Anyone know ?

Procedural 2d.. hmm..yeah photoshop has that to an extent.... using actions and history you can go back and edit past operations if I recall. Vector based art this would be easier to pull off since everything is curve data rather then pixel bitmaps. Illustrator would have some options like this.

Other than that there isn't much out there unless I'm forgetting something.

Although honestly I can't see how you can work in 2d for image editing like in houdini for 3d.

Theres always hcomposite for general layering and distortion stuff =).

you re right i saw a the beta of illustrator 9 and you can pretty much edit anything now (even the effects). I would love to see photoshop do the same.
i ve never touch hcomposite before... can i do like photoshop work on it.. or is it too much.

Umm if you are using Houdini then you used H [houdini] composite. Just goto the Composite editor on the smarty screen of houdini or open a shell and type hcomposite to load up a standalone composite session. You can do custom filtering effects and such via COPs ala photoshop.

I recently had to feed some animation into a cop network which jittered and and sampled the input and slapped an animated overlay of interlacing lines into creating a video viewfinder/camcorder look for a shot I was workingon.

Its pretty flexible for stuff like that.

I don't know any software which uses procedural paradigm
to edit still images. But there a re many compositing software
to use a procedural workflow. Actually, all the professionnal
apps, except After Effects !! (try Digital Fusion/Maya Fusion,
Shake, and so on...). I think you can edit still images with them.

It does not use layers like PS, but objects. You can turn any selection into an object with attributes like translate, rotate, scale, etc. all in 2D space. Its a highend tool, there exist a Demo Version, with the only rstriction, that you cannot save images graeter then 1600 x 1600 (!!!) Pixels ... A real highlight are the 2D Lattice Boxes ...

Take a look at FilmFX64 (http://www.satoripaint.com). It's object oriented and resolution independant. It offers 64bit color, rotoscoping and luma/chroma keying as well.

Basically, you are able to edit/delete/move to a different layer/change z-order of every object from paint strokes to filters at any time without disturbing the rest of the image. It isn't a replacement for Photoshop per se. It lacks many features that Photoshop has. But then the reverse is true as well. It does beat Photoshop out in the brush department and is exceptionally good with large images (I can paint in real-time on images that would bring Photoshop to it's knees). If you are looking for an app for painting textures, masking, rotoscoping, matte painting etc... Satori is great. And it's far cheaper than it used to be. They used to charge in the range of $1200 for it. I think it's $100 right now. Don't let the price fool you. It is very powerful.

V4 is due out in the new year and should bring some significant improvements based on what I have been told.
