How can I draw a matte in a layer?

I want to draw a matte/mask in a layer,I want it as a matte/mask to another layer.for example.I want to define a region in a layer to overlop another upper layer,so I can put a image in the current layer and looks like it located betweent two layers.anybody understood?Please give me some tips.thanks!

Try using the Stencil Layer option in the Surface tab of your Composite Controls.
