How do I auto-select all child/leaf nodes?

This is probably a dumb question but is there a way to select every node under a selected parent? I have a complex heirarchy and I want to perform commands on every node in it (IE: freeze, show hidden, etc..). however, when I select the parent I can only perform these operations on the parent. Am I mising something basic?
