I have a character that is animated. I want to use it in a crowd seqence. its like a wave where the character jumps up as the camera comes closer to the character. can anyone help me with this....please...

use a particle system with rendered sprites of the character (if this is not enough and you need real 3d, then use instancer). Now create a nurbs plane, use as goal, create goalU and goalV attributes and make them random.
To trigger them with a camera write an expression that influences the sprite sequence dependent on the distance to camera.
