How To Convert A Qiicktime File To A Compressed File

the thing is i renderd a .mov file through shake , this .mov file size is around 1G.

now, i want to convert this .mov file to such as divx or other popular format , which has small size and keep the quality good.

I tired to test it in quicktime pro and choose different format and converted it out.
but the quality is awful...

does someone has experience about this and can help me out ?

What settings are you using for compression, what codec, etc... so we can help adjust your settings. Also what is the purpose of the end product? Web? DVD? CD? etc....
