How to make exrude polygon out of a curve (embossed design model)

I'm creating a simple scabbard in 3d maya I want to add a design (emboss) on the scabbard but decided to separate the design model from the scabbard

can somebody please help me on this? im not use to using curves, but i heard that its much easier to create this kind of design from a curve because it has curve corners

but only different design and hopefully still editable, i still want to make the pointy parts a bit more pointy thats another reason i want to create it seperately from the scabbard

Could be a good start with Surfaces->Surfaces->BevelPlus[].. turn on Polygonal otuput. Adjust params so you can get least acceptable amount of geometry and then extrude outer rear edge. Weld vertices together to some plane, or make closed objects and do boolean Union with polyCube.. triangulate.. cleanup..
