How to mirror without merging?

hi all, just a quick one

ive just started my first maya project and have tried using the mirror command to duplicate arms, legs, ect. but it always merges the models so i cant select them indivdualy. and yes, i did uncheck the merge object button.

if you can shed any light on this then please let me know, its buggin me having to scale by -1 all the time!!

if these are polygons just select that object and click edit polygons> separate. thats what i do
