Hi,
I am planning on setting up a network, so we can render maya scenes that uses mental ray nodes. 1.- Do we need to export a .mi fle to render my maya scene with mental ray?2.- Do we need a mental ray software beside the one that comes with my Maya 2008?3.- Do we need another software to manage the render file through my network?
Thnx.
thnx Kobayashy,
1.- Regarding .mi (they are 2 .mi format, Binary and ASCII) what are the difference between these two?2.-When you say mental ray stand alone you mean another besides the one that comes integrated within Maya?3.-Does this Deadline software is compatible with Maya 2008?

Most render managers these days should allow you render regular maya files with mental ray inside Maya Complete. Personally I think it is a waste of time using .mi files unless you need to directly manipulate them. First there is all the extra time to export plus all the extra file storage it takes up. It is also much cheaper to simply buy more maya seats instead of standalone, especially under 64 bit linux or windows (2k per processor for each 64 bit MR license).
Oh and one other thing, I am not talking about Satellite renders. That is completely different.
As for Deadline, you should check their webpage and see if it supports v2008.
Well theres some good reasons to using standalone, but yes you could use maya nodes instead. As for why you would use ascii ones. Well you might want to awk the result.
But yes instead of buying mentalray standalone nodes id really buy prman nodes instead.
