How To Use Messageline Command?

Hey guys,
I put a messageLine on my UI, but I have no idea how to get any text onto my messageLine.
say I have three layouts, and I want the messageLine showing different messages depends on where the mouse is.
Does anyone know how this thing works?

hmm.. messageLine has no unique parameters, only the standard ELF flags and it isn't used or referred to once in the entire collection of installed maya scripts... The only place it appears is in the MEL docs... I'm guessing no-one knows how to use it then, not even Alias!

It is supposed to show annotation/help of the gui but it It has been preceded by the help line!

Well.....
I guess that I will then just use a textfield, and drop a univeral callback on every layout.
